要测量一个很大的直流电流，例如几十安培，甚至更大，几百安培，没有那么大量程的电流表进行电流的测量，这就要采用分流器。分流器是一个可以通过大电流的电阻，当电流流过分流器时，在它的两端就会出现一个毫伏级的电压，于是用毫伏电压表来测量这个电压，再将这个电压换算成电流.就完成了大电流的测量。
分流器是测量直流电流用的，根据直流电流通过电阻时在电阻两端产生电压的原理制成。分流器是电流比率仪器，有时也指电流电压转换器。常与测量仪器仪表的电流电路并联，以扩大其测量范围；或在其上测量电压，从而间接测量电流。
