PLC内存有用户及系统两大部分。用户内存主要用以存储用户程序，个别的还将其中的一部分划为系统所用。系统内存是与CPU配置在一起的。CPU既要具备访问这些内存的能力，还应提供相应的存储介质。
用户内存大小与可存储的用户程序量有关。内存大，可存储的程序量大，也就可进行更为复杂的控制。从发展趋势看，内存容量是在不断增大着。大型PLC的内存容量可达几十k，以至于一百多k。系统内存对于用户，主要体现在PLC能提供内部器件。不同的内部器件占据系统内存的不同区域。在物理上并无这些器件，仅仅为RAM。但通过运行程序进行使用时，给使用者提供的却实实在在有这些器件。
