一般手动再生型介质过滤器以过滤器运行压降或过滤器运行时间来决定是否需要反洗清洁，当过滤器运行压降大于.5MPa（或达到运行周期时间）时需要考虑反洗清洁；全自动介质过滤器有时间再生型与流量再生型两种反洗清洁方式，可设置过滤器运行时间或过滤流量作为反洗再生条件，当过滤器运行到设定时间周期或流量值后，过滤器自动进入反洗程序，让后自动完成整个反洗清洁过程后回到运行状态。介质过滤器反洗清洁周期时间或流量值的决定因素为原水水质，用户可根据自己原水水质情况与厂家建议设置。
