一般认为对泵必须进行整体解体修理，并可使泵恢复到原有的性能，称之为大修。要制定出泵的大修理周期是比较困难的，这是因为这要取决于泵的用途，泵的结构和材料，被输送的液体，运行工况条件和环境，以及大修理费用和停车费用，影响生产程度等等多方面因素。一般大修次数以少为宜，泵要大修应该是当泵的性能显著降低且不能满足工况要求，或预计下一个生产周期可能坏和性能低，或者是出现因故障不能运行时才安排。其周期安排往往要根据实际经验确定。
