PLC（ProgrammableLogicController）自1968年被发明，经过40余年的发展至今，已经是非常成熟的控制器。根据调研机构的估计，过70％的PLC应用是低于128点且单纯是数字I／O，而且工程师只需利用数字I／O和少量的模拟I／O数以及简单的编程技巧就可完成80％的工业应用，所以近年来PLC的趋势是朝向低成本简单的PLC，促进了低成本微型PLC的成长。
然而，虽然一方面80％的应用需要使用简单的低成本控制器，而另一方面其它的20％应用则出了传统PLC控制系统所能提供的功能。工程师在开发这些20％的应用需要有更高的循环速度，复杂控制运算，更多仿真功能以及能更好地和企业网络集成。此外，工业领域传统的控制类型包括离散控制、过程控制与运动控制，以前往往分别采用独立、的控制器，彼此之间通讯时，需要编制大量的工程化软件，工作量大且复杂。所以这部份的需求使得PLC开始演化成开放式架构，统一的开发软件，覆盖了多种控制类型，完成了控制平台的横向集成，在系统设计、项目实施、运行维护、培训、系统集成、备件等环节上，都大大减少了用户成本。
